Get to Know the THSCA

The Texas High School Coaches Association was formally organized on November 28, 1930 with twenty-eight members and was called the Texas High School Football Coaches Association.

The first big step for THSCA was in 1933, when the organization sponsored the first coaching school held in San Antonio and had 65 coaches in attendance.

In 1941, the association dropped the word “football” from its title and opened its doors to all secondary school coaches.

The original objective of the THSCA was to improve athletics in Texas high schools, by raising the standards and improving the caliber of its own membership. Thus, the reason for the establishment & publication of its first Texas Coach magazine in 1957.

In 1960, the THSCA inducted its first class into the newly organized Hall of Honor. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a coach by the association.

The Board established the THSCA Advisory Committees in 1974 to collect feedback from each sport specifically on potential rule changes, health concerns & other issues that may pertain to their respective sports.

In 2004 the THSCA Benevolence Fund was established to assist with hardship cases outside the realm of our current Permanent Injury and Memorial Benefit programs. Coaches across the state host Our Day to Shine scrimmages/spring games to collect donations to support this fund, which provides much needed assistance to athletes and coaches in need. 

In 2008 the THSCA created the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation (THSCEF) in an effort to develop funds from a range of donors, in support of our professional education programs that strengthen and reinforce professionalism for high school coaches throughout the state of Texas. 

In 2012 the vision for the first annual Texas Coaches Leadership Summit came to fruition, when 300 coaches, athletic directors, and school adminstrators participated in the pilot summit in Coppell, TX.

In 2024, the membership of the THSCA surpassed 27,000 for the first time in association history, and the attendance at the THSCA Coaching School & Convention in San Antonio broke a record with a total of 18,760 attendees!
